Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Peter Jackson’s documentary “The Beatles: Get Back” that was released on Disney+ in late 2021. The documentary takes a look at the life of The Beatles towards the end of their incredible run as a group. In this lesson, Ayla Tesler-Mabe breaks down John Lennon’s part from the title track “Get Back”.
Initially, this song was a social commentary, but it eventually turned into the song we all now know and love. The interesting thing about “Get Back” is that John Lennon actually played the lead guitar part instead of George Harrison giving it a totally different feel from other songs by The Beatles.

Nailing John’s Feel
John’s playing was quite different from George’s since he wasn’t quite as technically practiced. His licks weren’t always clean or precise and sometimes notes might cut off a little abruptly. On many of his bends, he would either over or under-bend the note as well. To really capture the sound of John’s playing, you’ll need to set precision aside and focus more on vibe than anything else.
Learning The Song
Unlike many other songs you’ll learn on the guitar, “Get Back” features two separate guitar solos. Ayla will cover all the nuances and teach you each of these solos note-by-note. Along with the solos, you’ll also dig into the verses, choruses and all the pieces in between. There’s a lot to learn here, so feel free to take this lesson bit by bit.
