Contrary to what the internet might tell you, some incredible music has been released this year. So as 2022 comes to a close, we wanted to take a look at some of the best guitar riffs to grace the airwaves in the past twelve months. In this video, we’ll be spanning multiple genres and including riffs from Panic! At The Disco, Marcus King, The Weeknd, and more. So without further ado, here are Ayla’s top six riffs of 2022.
“Sugar Soaker” – Panic! At The Disco
We’ll kick things off with an old-school rock’n’roll riff by Panic! At The Disco. This riff is mostly just some quick power chords, but you’ll also add in a few bluesy low E-string bends for good measure.
“Sacrifice” – The Weeknd
The Weeknd’s “Sacrifice” features a guitar riff that is both smooth and energetic. The key to nailing this riff is to keep a steady rhythm and add in some light palm muting for added texture.
“Iron Lung” – King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
If you’re looking for a riff with a little more edge, look no further than “Iron Lung” by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. This riff uses some fuzzy power chords, trills, and a cool pentatonic lick.
“Lie Lie Lie” – Marcus King
Marcus King’s “Lie Lie Lie” features a riff that is both bluesy and infectious. To get it sounding right, you’ll need to nail the groovy rhythm by playing in between the beat, then resolving by landing on two big power chords.
“Bad Habit” – Steve Lacy Steve
With this riff, you’ll get to make use of a few soulful bar chord shapes. Even though it’s a pop song, it’s the perfect tune for expanding your chord vocabulary.
“ᐸmaybeᐳ it’s my fault” – Willow Smith
And here we have Ayla’s number one riff of the year, which requires you to tune your guitar to drop Db. Things get a little heavy and chaotic with this riff as you mix chunky power chords with sliding octaves.
