In this episode of Riffin’ Through Time, we’ll be taking a look at the main riff from “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison. This is one of those licks that’s a little deceptive. While it looks and sounds easy, there are some particularly challenging movements you’ll need to get down to play it cleanly.

All we’re doing with this riff is harmonizing the major scale with roots and thirds. It can pose a bit of a challenge if you’re trying to use the same fingers to make the different shapes. I’d suggest swapping fingers as you move to make it sound as smooth as possible.

Start off taking it slow. Focus on being accurate and getting the motions committed to muscle memory. As you get more comfortable, bring it up to speed, all while focusing on keeping it clean. With a little practice, you’ll have this riff down in no time!
