There are a few songs that can be considered rites of passage for guitarists. One of these is the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic “Sweet Home Alabama.” Released on the band’s 1974 album Second Helping, it is considered by many to be one of the greatest southern rock songs of all time.

“Sweet Home Alabama” isn’t overly complicated to play on guitar, and even if you’re only ready for level one, you’ll still be able to play along with the original recording! If you want to get people up on their feet, dancing and singing along, it’s a tune that’s hard to beat. So without further do, let’s get into it.

The Chords

Everything in this song revolves around just three open chords — D major, C add9 (C major), and G major. Let’s begin by getting comfortable playing these chords and changing between them.

Moving Through The Levels

For the remainder of this lesson, you’ll need to download the tabs so you can follow along with the video. Things will start off pretty simple at level one and get increasingly challenging as we move through the levels. By the time you reach level five, you’ll be able to play the song just like the recording!
