Professional guitarist & the instructor behind best-selling education training packs including The Guitar System, The Beginner Guitar System, and The Blues Guitar Blueprint.
ate Savage always knew he wanted to share his love for playing the guitar with others. After earning his Music Degree at San Jacinto College and playing hundreds of shows across Canada, the USA, and Europe -- he wanted to find a better way to help guitarists around the world.
So in 2009, he connected with Musora Media to start GuitarLessons.com -- a massive library of free online guitar lessons that has since helped more than 20 million guitar players.
“I loved playing shows and touring,” Nate said in 2009. “But my heart has always been set on guitar education. I truly believe that playing the guitar can be a life-changing experience, so having the opportunity to create online lessons and help students around the world felt like such a perfect opportunity.”
Nate’s most popular videos are built to give beginners an easier way to get started without the friction of private lessons. “8 Guitar Chords You Must Know” has reached more than 4 million views. “Play 10 Songs With 4 Chords”, “5 Essential Strumming Patterns”, and “How To Hold The Guitar” are just a few other examples of videos that have been seen more by more than a million students.
Through his online lessons, Nate was able to reach more guitarists than he’d ever imagined and get personal feedback from tens of thousands of YouTube comments and personal emails -- gaining a deeper understanding of where students were having issues, what obstacles were getting in the way, and what was creating the fastest breakthroughs for getting to that next level.
More than anything: it comes down to better organized lessons and ongoing motivation.
“If you’re a beginner, it’s all about establishing the fundamentals so you can make your playing come alive”, Nate says. “It’s too easy to hit a rut and give up. So my approach is to give students a plan that delivers consistent momentum, so there’s always something to be excited about and to keep working towards!”
Nate has developed a proven formula for helping students get started on the guitar and become more complete musicians.
I've always wanted to play guitar but was worried about not being able to understand how to read music or make the lessons stick as I don't always remember things well. But Nate's lessons flow easily and are enjoyable to tune into, which is half the battle won really! It's enjoyable, therefore it doesn't feel like a chore.
Nate has a teaching style that puts you at ease with a warm and down to earth tone that makes him relatable and his lessons are enjoyable which makes you WANT to continue learning. Each step is dissected in a simple way so that beginners such as me can make sense of it all.
Free lessons are great, but fumbling through in no particular order isn't the best way to learn new skills. Nate introduces new skills and combines them with practice of previously learned material that makes the learning stick. Nate presents everything clearly, and each lesson is just another small step on the path. None of the lessons are overwhelming or trying to provide too much at one time.
I had guitar lessons for 5 or 6 years. I learned more in the first year of taking lessons from Nate than I had learned in those lessons or the last 20 years of learning on my own. I was barely an intermediate guitarist when I started with the course, but went back and took all the lessons from the beginning. It was surprising that I learned things in the beginning section that I had missed all these years. It is ridiculously inexpensive considering the content. Thanks Nate!
After a hiatus of over 30 years of not playing guitar I started to play again. Nate’s teaching has really helped me refresh my old skills and learn new ones. The way the lessons are a series of short videos helps me learn new things without feeling totally overwhelmed. Nate’s teaching style and communication skills really help me with grasping the concepts he is teaching.
He explains things simply and doesn’t overload you with too much information at the same time. The range of lessons is large enough that there is something for every skill level and it keeps growing. The community forum is awesome too. It is so cool to interact with other guitar players from around the world.
Nate has a great style that projects a genuine passion for what he’s teaching. This approach is a great blend of the best features of all the other options I’ve tried, but better. And the interactive community atmosphere is far and away better than anything I’ve come across.
The detail of the lessons and videos really get clear what is being taught. The relevant documentation and audio being right there with the lesson makes it very convenient. And the backing tracks are spectacular. Having a custom written track that focuses on exactly what you’re working on and nothing more is priceless.
The biggest surprise is the interactivity. The updates, the forum, the live stuff. It’s not just a website with lessons. It’s this living, active thing. The community is wonderful… and motivating… and helpful. And the fact that the guys that make this thing are there involved and active is just great.
The first thing I noticed was Nate’s passion about teaching people the guitar. You can tell he has spent a great deal of time thinking about what it takes to teach someone the guitar. I know from my own experience it’s not easy to teach someone something they have no clue about (trust me…). And Nate has done a great job in the videos explaining everything from changing out the strings to playing higher level songs. The sessions have structure to them, but they feel like they are occurring right in your family room.
Nate takes the time to personally reply to questions either by email or through the forum. There is no doubt he is a busy guy, but he cares about the program so he takes the time to deal with people who have paid for the service. No questions are too stupid to ask. I appreciate what Nate and the crew are doing.
Due to health reasons my physical activity has decreased significantly. I needed a new hobby and something I always wanted to learn was how to play the guitar. I knew learning an instrument was going to be very hard and I could not drive to go anywhere to get lessons.
The program starts out teaching you how to hold the guitar and pick and the first thing you play is a one note practice lesson. Once I heard my guitar sound like his in the video I knew that I could do this. The videos show multiple angles. Some other video lessons I’ve seen are filmed at one angle and you cannot see the detail on how to play a certain cord like you can in these lessons. It will take you from never holding a guitar to playing more difficult strumming patterns and licks. You will need to put time into it to get everything out of it, but you can do it at your own pace.
I first started playing guitar on Rocksmith, so I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I tried some apps, watched some videos online and messed around for about a year. That’s when I knew to try something else. I have looked at a lot of programs and have never found anything close to Guitareo.com.
Nate does a nice job of keeping each lesson simple and showing how to perform everything. I also like when he shows how to make the jam-track more musical instead of just playing scales or chords. I have had several big leaps forward in my playing due to the lessons and motivation of Guitareo.com. I look forward to getting better and know I am on the right track.
I wasn’t sure I would be able to learn with online instruction. I checked out YouTube videos of instructors and really liked Nate’s style the most. His lessons are organized and well planned. Others seem to bounce all over the place or are so impressed with themselves that they talk down to students.
Nate has something to offer everyone at any level, and he knows how to offer what the level needs. He doesn’t talk or teach above or below you. Each lesson is presented with respect for the audience. And we are not distracted by volume, equipment or production issues. Everything is professionally done and the lessons are fun to go through and enjoyable to watch.
I like Nate’s teaching style. I can’t really put a finger on why, but I seem to find Nate’s approach and style of teaching to help me better than all other things I’ve used to learn the guitar. I like the lesson plans and series as they give me a structure to my learning. And I like the live sessions, particularly the focused play along sessions as they give me the chance to get some real time feedback from the community and team which I’ve found helpful.
The fact that there is a supportive community of people at all different stages of ability is probably what I have liked the most. That you can go into the forum and say “I’m new and I’m struggling with an open A chord” and people are supportive and offer advice rather than being disrespectful because you are struggling with something they find easy is great for my enthusiasm and motivation. There are a lot of guitar forums out there, so it’s nothing special in that regard, but the fact that it is a really respectful and supportive community is the best element of the site for me.
As with any web based training you always are concerned with is it legit or is it a scam? Will the information be useful or repetitive? Will it have value to me? I am a 45 year old man who works hard with my hands each day. I haven't played in 30 years so will I be able to learn and be good at it?
Using Nate’s lessons has been a blessing to me. The lessons cover so many forms of guitar playing. I love that I can work at my own pace. Focusing on the styles that I like best but still being able to gain knowledge on other styles. Through the postings on the lessons and personal communication you feel you are part of a community. I like that it is web based allowing for updates and additions to the program.
